Description

The DNA blend is a combination of Colombian and Ethiopian coffees. The Colombian part of the coffee blend offers a rich, chocolatey body, while the Ethiopian component cuts through the richness with its bright, apple fruit notes. This blend has a velvety body and great balance between acidity and sweetness, making the DNA Blend great for house drip coffee, espresso, or cold brew.

Colombia Heriberto (Washed Process):

The Maya family has been growing and producing coffee for five generations, naming each of the coffee lots after a member of her family. Coffees from the Maya family are exceptional in quality, and go through specialized processing which showcases the characteristics of each varietal and farm terroir. Heriberto, a Castillo varietal, is grown on the La Bagatela at 1600 to 1750 meters above sea level, granting their coffees a concentrated and bright flavor. It goes through a traditional washing process, 16 hours of parchment fermentation, and then silo dried with controlled airflow— All aspects of the production process create a delightfully appley and sweet Colombian coffee for the DNA Blend.

Ethiopia Guji Kercha (Natural Process):

The Oromo people of the Guji region have their own origin story for the discovery of coffee; that’s how deeply woven the crop is within their culture. Instead of Kaldi the goat herder, the Oromo sky god Waaqa brought forth a new plant from the earth with his tears that were shed over the wrongful death of a loyal servant. From as early as the 10th century, coffee has been present in Oromo culture as a special plant that provided energy when the beans were mixed with fats and eaten on long journeys.

Centuries later, farmers in Guji still follow traditional growing methods that complement the incredibly fertile soil there. Because there is so much nutrition in the land, coffee is grown organically, although most are not certified as such. Many landrace varieties are still thriving on Ethiopia’s coffee farms, intercropped with maize, barley, wheat, beans, and other crops that provide food for the family.

Guji coffee distinguishes itself from Yirgacheffe and Sidamo profiles with complex-yet-balanced choco coffee cups that work beautifully as espresso or filter brews. This natural G2 coffee was sourced in partnership with Nardos Coffee Export, a third-generation family-run business in Addis Ababa with farming roots in the Oromia region. The smallholders that came together to produce this lot grow Wolichu (74158) and Kudhume (74112) heirloom varieties at 1980 masl, sun-drying the cherries for 12-18 days to develop sweet flavors and smooth body in the final cup.

This is not an exaggeration: the DNA blend from Lightwave is the greatest flavored espresso bean I have ever had the delight of consuming. It’s so good, that when I order an iced cortado or latte from ANY PLACE that does not have this bean, I am immediately depressed and want to drive back home as soon as possible to make my own drink. I first came into contact with the DNA blend at an incredible coffee shop in Koreatown called SPL (You gotta go if you haven’t yet. Best croissants/bagels I’ve ever had and best coffee/tea drinks. I order the Gibraltar there and it’s *chef’s kiss) I recently moved to a different part of Los Angeles, so now I will be ordering from Lightwave directly to get the best bean there is. It is smooth, creamy, and anytime I pull my own shot – not bitter or acidic at all – just the perfect balance. When I travel out of town, I actually bring the beans with me because nothing else compares. It’s wild. I have been trying out different coffee shops and beans all around LA and DNA still takes the cake. Thank you, Lightwave for producing such wonderful products – but especially the DNA.

I didn’t even know I wanted this until they sent me a bag of it with another order. Best thing that ever happened.

This is one of those coffees I couldn’t stop thinking about after I ran out. The honey flavor was like nothing I’d tasted in any other coffee until then.

The memory of it wouldn’t stop nagging me, so I eventually reordered 🙂
