The Capili Community in Cajamarca sets an impressive example of what the power of collective motivation can achieve. The community spans 197 farms across over 570 hectares, around 130 of which are part of a conservation zone. In two years, from 2020 to 2022, the Capili Community optimized the processing of their fully washed coffee to save over 93% water usage in their commitment to sustainability.

Cajamarca renowned for being a region where productivity is high per hectare. The sweet coffees with bright acidity that grow here come from lush highlands at soaring altitudes of 1,500 to 2,000m.

Peru, a top producer of fair trade and certified organic coffee, has two key distinctions that help differentiate Peru green coffee from the highly competitive exports coming out of its neighboring countries. In the 1990s, big brands shifted their sourcing direction towards fair trade, ecological, and humane coffees. Peru saw an opportunity and began investing in organic certification.

Nevertheless, increased funds from the organic movement helped to revitalize farms and infrastructure. In just ten years, coffee cultivation land grew from 163,000 hectares to 215,000 hectares in 2005. Today, 375,000 hectares are dedicated to coffee production with over 90,000 hectares certified organic.

Organic farming on its own, however, can be a costly venture for farmers, starting with a three-year downtime as they transition their land. Additionally, organic farming can also leave crops vulnerable to disease and pestilence. Peru, the world’s 5th largest producer of Arabica coffee, gains in popularity every year. The thin air, soaring altitudes, and fertile soil throughout Peru come together to form a breathtaking environment where coffee thrives. However, sharing a border with the largest coffee-producing nation in the world is not easy. While Brazil’s efficiency and price points are unmatched, Peru finds its footing in differentiation and variety, making every harvest something to look forward to.
